Rutabaga is excited to partner with Ben Lawry to host our 3rd Kayak Camp at Tybee Island, Georgia, from February 14-17, 2013. Escape the Midwest winter for great paddling and excellent instruction in a beautiful coastal setting! It's a perfect time to develop your skills and launch your 2013 paddling season!
Kayak Camp is three full days of kayak instruction customized to meet your personal paddling goals. It is unlike many other instruction opportunities as it is designed to be student driven and extremely participatory. Ben provides the framework for learning and guides students through the learning process. We'll spend time on the water and dry land learning practical skills while playing, laughing and having a good time. Fun and safety is always at the core of our approach to teaching. Our group size is always limited to 8 students with a student - teacher ratio of 4:1.
The curriculum is built around student goals and might include stroke improvement for better efficiency, landing/launching in the surf, surfing, boat control in a variety of conditions, navigation, trip planning and management, group management, night paddling and rescues.
Tybee Island is a wonderful environment for learning with a broad range of paddling conditions available. We base our camp near the beach at one of Tybee Island's classic beach houses. (We're not "camping" at Kayak Camp!) This house serves as our group meeting location, kitchen/dining room and lodging.
What level of paddler is a good fit for Kayak Camp? Because of the diversity of conditions, Kayak Camp is appropriate for a wide range of skill levels. As a baseline, paddlers should be able to paddle straight, be comfortable with wet exits, and do small edges and turns. Paddlers should have some bracing skills, maybe have even tried rolling. MOST important is the desire to try new things, have fun in the currents, waves and wind (conditions) and be be game to play with navigation/seamanship. Kayak Camp is an opportunity to step it up a bit and explore paddling outside your normal comfort zone!
Camp begins on Thursday evening, February 14, with dinner and group meeting. We ask students to please arrive at Tybee Island by 6 p.m. Instruction on-water and classroom sessions run Friday, February 15, morning - Sunday, February 17, 5 p.m. Some students leave Sunday evening and others stay Sunday night and leave Monday morning.
