Welcome! We're glad you want to join us for Canoecopia 2024! Upon accepting the Terms and Conditions below, click "Accept and Continue" which will take you to the Speaker Application form to submit your proposal for consideration.
For pointers on submitting a strong proposal, please see
Tips for Planning Your Proposal for lots of helpful information.
Please understand that submitting a proposal does not guarantee you a speaking position at Canoecopia.Canoecopia is a great venue for presenters and we always receive more proposals than we can accept. Below are some tips to help you plan out your presentation proposal.
Presentation Length
Presentations at the in-person event need to be kept under 45 minutes, and ideally will be between 30-40 minutes to accommodate for questions at the end of your talk. If you have a presentation idea that is longer or shorter than that, please list that in the comments box on the form.
Presentation Title
The title of your presentation should highlight what you will be talking about, so be thoughtful when choosing your title.
Presentation Content
Presentations are expected to inform show attendees about a paddling area, skill or adventure and are not intended to be infomercials for businesses. Our audience has been very clear in feedback that they do not want presentations to be commercials for the speakers' businesses.
Speaker Preparation
Canoecopia speakers are a mix of polished folks who speak frequently and those who might not do much public speaking. This informal, folksy quality is part of Canoecopia's charm, but we still expect each speaker to be well prepared, to practice in advance, to select good quality images (if applicable), and to have a smooth flow to their presentation.
About Politics
Paddlers hold a wide range of political ideals. Canoecopia speakers are expected to refrain from including personal politics in their presentation. It's certainly appropriate to encourage action, specifically when it comes to environmental issues (Save The Boundary Waters!), but avoid political rhetoric.
Stipends
Most of our speakers present for the love of sharing their stories. Others have support from manufacturers or operate businesses that benefit from spreading the word as a presenter. Most speakers do not receive any financial compensation for presenting. We have a limited speaker budget, and financial requests do factor into our decisions. If you are requesting a travel or lodging stipend, please contact Darren Bush at
darrenb@rutabaga.com.

When making selections we consider audience feedback from the past and strive for a balance of canoe/kayak/SUP, local/exotic, educational/motivational, and familiar faces/new presenters. Our goal is to put together a creative and interesting mix of topics and presenters, representing the whole spectrum of paddling experiences. We are always eager for new topics, adventures, and people so feel free to share the proposal link!
You should receive one confirmation email for each proposal you submit.
If you do not receive a confirmation email, it means there may have been an error along the way. Please email Chloe Machula if you do not receive a confirmation email at chloem@rutabaga.com so we can confirm we got your proposal.
